You would think a positive pregnancy test and a late period are all you need to know about a pregnancy, but it isn’t. There’s more to know to protect your health and keep you safe.
The information you need comes only from an ultrasound. We can provide a referral for a free and confidential limited obstetrical ultrasound after you receive a positive pregnancy test result from our center.
What Is An Ultrasound?
An ultrasound is an imaging procedure that uses sound waves to create a picture of the inside of your uterus.
A trained technician (sonographer) applies a gel to your abdomen. They rub a wand-like instrument called a transducer through the gel. The transducer picks up the echoes of sound waves as they bounce off of structures inside your body.
The sound waves transform into real-time images you can view on a computer screen.
Why Do I Need An Ultrasound?
Ultrasound answers three critical questions.
Is my pregnancy growing, or have I miscarried?
Experts estimate that as many as 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. Most are in the first trimester (12 weeks or under). It is entirely possible to get a positive pregnancy test days or weeks after a miscarriage because it takes your body time to return to its pre-pregnancy hormone level.
What Is The Gestational Age?
Gestational age is the name for how many weeks you have been pregnant. If you are considering an abortion, this is especially important information. How far along you are determines the type of procedure you qualify for.
Where Is The Pregnancy Located?
Most pregnancies form in the uterus, but on rare occasions, some form outside. This is known as an ectopic pregnancy. As it grows, the pregnancy can become life-threatening. You need to see your healthcare provider as soon as possible.
