Why Would I Consider Adoption?

Women from all walks of life choose adoption for their children. They have a variety of reasons. Do you share any of these?

  • You feel you are too young or too old to parent.
  • You are already raising children and do not have the physical or financial ability to bring home another.
  • Your partner is pressuring you to abort, but you do not want an abortion.
  • Your parents or partner cannot or will not support you financially.
  • You are currently in an unsafe environment that would not be good for a child.
  • You don’t want to parent but don’t want to abort.

How Do I Make An Adoption Plan?

You need to start with a reputable adoption coordinator who will not charge you for their services. They should fully explain the process to you without making you feel pressured.

You can change your mind at any time until you sign papers terminating (ending) your parental rights. In most states, you must wait 48 to 72 hours after the birth of your child before you can sign.

Choosing the Potential Adoptive Parents

Adoption coordinators today encourage women to select the adoptive family. Because your adoption coordinator knows this is one of the most important decisions you will make, they will discuss what you want for your child.

Do you want your child to be the oldest or have ready-made siblings? Should they live on a farm or grow up in the city? You choose the potential future you want for them.

Choosing Your Adoption Plan

There are three adoption plans to choose from: open, semi-open, and closed. How much contact you want with your child and their adoptive family later on determines the plan you choose.

Open Adoption

You choose the adoptive couple and exchange identifying information with them. You can decide how you wish to contact one another, or the adoption agency you select will set guidelines for you.

Semi-Open Adoption

You select the adoptive couple with this plan, but your chosen adoption coordinator mediates (sends) all communication. You still have contact, but you have more privacy.

Closed Adoption

You remain completely anonymous, and there is no future contact.
