Many women describe feelings of relief following their abortions. But, for some women, that relief turns into grief and sadness within days, weeks, or even years.

There is no right or wrong way to feel after an abortion. A variety of factors can affect the emotional outcome. Was someone pressuring you to get an abortion? Do you have moral reasons for not wanting an abortion? Perhaps you were farther along in your pregnancy than you realized.

Each situation is unique. If you struggle with mental health issues following an abortion, you are not alone. We are here for you.

Can Abortion Cause Mental Health Problems?

There is much controversy over whether abortion causes women to have mental health issues. One study suggests the following:

  • Abortion is consistently associated with elevated rates of mental illness compared to women without a history of abortion.
  • The abortion experience directly contributes to mental health problems for at least some women.
  • There are risk factors, such as pre-existing mental illness, that identify women at greatest risk of mental health problems after an abortion.

Another study found that certain women who had an abortion years earlier dealt with relationship problems, substance misuse, depression, suicidal ideation, and PTSD. Mental health struggles are real after an abortion.
